Petajavesi then on to Virrat

Exchanging of Rotary flags with the Petajavesi Rotary Club. We were unable to attend their regular meeting. But some of them joined us on our previous day when we toured the Old Church.

Our host Esa. Who was kind enough to open his hotel and museum to us.

We made our first stop at the Petajavesi town hall.

Teppo, the city manager was kind enough to give us a presentation in English, despite his discomfort with the language.

After the city hall we visited the local water treatment facility. The site was built only two years ago, and services a wide area. They are currently dealing with the large spring flooding, but because of the new facility are managing to process all the extra water.

After lunch we headed to ao, or Jyvaskyla Vocational Institute. This is a vocational school, and can be used as their high school substitute.

These are some final projects by students in different disciplines.

This is a table which a wood working student burned in the design.

Another final project. The main divisions of the school are woodwork, metalwork, photography, fashion and textiles.

Some examples of the range of interests.

Muni showed us around the woodwork area, he explained that for his students they are required to make a box, chair and then a table. Once they are finished with these tasks they can go on to work on individual projects.

One of the students gave us a box to try and open. Of course none of us succeeded.

The metalwork kids and woodwork kids marveling over the design, which works by turning it upside down.

This was a project being done on commission by one of the students.

Metal used to make jewelry.

The master blacksmith.

Olli, a metalwork student telling us about the iron handle commission he was working on. He also made the armor in the previous picture.

The furnace.

Metal works' spike, I imagine it says something cool.

The photography studio.

Nestori took us around after the woodworking section. This is his department and he showed us how the lights can be used.

He works here as an employee fulfilling his army requirements.

Some of the textile student's final project.

The textile department and all the looms.

Silk screen machine.

Some of the table where the students dry their work.

Fashion design computer sketches.

One of the student's on going projects.

Traditional Finnish quilting design.

Our tour guides for the school. Thanks guys! Your work is amazing.

After saying goodbye in Petajavesi we drove an hour to Virrat.

Here is our cabin right next to the lake.

Blue skies and the first lake without ice!

The area stayed in is also a youth camp, and they use the boats to boast confidence.

They also have horseback riding available.

Pony.

The site also made museums and brought old buildings to the site to teach about Finnish culture. This is an old windmill.

In the evening the Virrat club had a special meeting just for us. We presented them with our banners, and enthralled them with our self presentations.

One of the Virrat Rotarians won a bottle of sparkling wine. He passed it along to us, so we enjoyed it. Thank you!
