Jyvaskyla Day 2

Heikki and Tula lived down this dirt road which bisected a forest owned by the city, they were the only house on the road.

Paivi gave a presentation on the Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. She was a biologist who specialized in the acquisition of forests and their preservation.

Later we visited the Jyvaskyla University where Heidi has her office. She explained how she uses mussels to analyze the pollution and chemicals in lakes. In this picture she is holding a basket what is used when placing the mussels in the lake.

After that we visited the university's particle accelerator.

Paul was explaining how the accelerator works, and how we can't see this one.

More science stuff that was impressive.

Where the newly created particles come to be analyzed. The gamma rays are studied to see how the particle is different or unusual.

A smaller accelerator which is less of a round, wave motion than a back and forth process. This one was used to analyze what happens to different materials when they encounter certain particles. So they were looking into how materials would react to solar radiation.

Teresa taking a photo of a accelerator which the university received from Russia as payment for USSR debt.

Lasers!

These lasers study particles and are pulsing. They can send these beams for long distances with the use of mirrors and cable.

Ian was explaining how their set up works and what they study...obviously lots of it stuck.

Ian's gremlin, who I imagine as a real life Big Bang Theory member.

After that we visited Mustankorkea another recycling center. We also were given a presentation by JAPA an organization that works with the city to educate and promote recycling.

They have many different sections for different types of waste.

We walked around a little bit to see the different bins. It was very cold and windy.

We then went up to the ski slope area to a cabin owned by one of the Rotarians. This is where we roasted our weenies.

Teresa, as we looked for a place to hang the dart board.

So we improvised.

Some of them played the Rotarians and were soundly beaten.

Group picture with Heidi our Finnish-only-in-name friend.

The view of the town from the top of the ski slope.

Michelle didn't like the salmiakki, a Finnish candy which is salty black licorice.

Heidi bought us all different types to try out.

The moon from my host parent's house.

Over looking the frozen lake.

My host parents laughing at my antics.

Heikki is a retired sports physiology professor. Here he is decked out in his professor's hat, and sword. Tula also showed me their traditional clothing which they wear on special occasions.

Night shot of the moon over the lake.

Their lovely home by the lake. Thank you very much for having me! I enjoyed staying with both of you.
