Petajavesi- Full Day

Today we went to the UNESCO World Heritage site, The Old Church.

Built in 1763-1764 all of red pine.

The ceiling was signed by the various different carpenters who worked on the project.

Weiping got to go to church this Sunday!

Men and women were assigned one side or another. Men on the left and women on the right, they numbered the pews and were fined if they sat on the incorrect bench.

Trap door which led down to the communion wine cellar. We wouldn't see bodies there, but apparently underneath the church there are graves of those who were buried before the church was built.

Shot with ourselves and the Petajavesi Rotarians.

There are approximately 9400 graves in the cemetery. The iron crosses were made by a Rotarian who met us at the church and who greeted us with his accordion.

The Old Church.

Giant Karhu! (Finnish beer, which means bear)

Teresa showing off the dairy hutch. Before Finland joined the EU there were many small dairy farms. They would use these small hutches to store the bails of milk for the truck to come by and pick up.

The pile of wood chips which they use to heat the house.

The wood chips get tossed down this chute, where they go to....

The incinerator!! Which self feeds the chips. This is very common in Finland, but in individual homes they have smaller ones.

Out on our walk we saw these cute doggies.

And the first green shoots of spring!
