Asikkala the Town

Asikkala Town Hall.

Our Asikkala tow guide was Aapo.

He also took us to a preschool and elementary school.

Babies getting an early start on education.

Schools in Finland have drying closets, mitten dryers and coat racks.

A Finnish classroom, half the kids had gone home already. These kids were here for extra study time in Finnish.

The area where we had lunch.

After lunch we went to the local fishing lure museum. Here is your guide to lake fishing in Finland.

Rapala is made in the town, which is a famous brand of lures.

Largest pike perch they have caught here in Finland.

These suckers also have teeth, and apparently are not the nicest fish to encounter.

Steve showing off the taxidermied weasel that lived at the top floor, which showed Finland's land based wildlife.

Our guide for the fishing museum.

Asikkala has this lock which has the largest movement of cargo in europe on a lock. It is in the middle of town and connects two major lakes together. It is very popular to use in the summer.

Later we went to a special Rotary meeting with the Asikkala club. The meeting was held at the Veterans Lodge where we were told about the Finnish history of WWII. A veteran, and Rotarian explained the history of the veterans and his role in the war.

He also told us about famous Asikkala residents who were highly decorated.

Steve was presented a Finnish Veterans flag.

Us and all the Asikkala Rotarians in attendance.

So occasionally in a Finnish hotel one misses the comforts of a home, so just turn on the tube and see this charming fire scene, complete with pop and crackle.
